Tam O’Shanter

A new musical in development

Overview

Tam O’Shanter is a new musical adaptation of Robert Burns’ famous poem, currently in development with Dark Skies Ensemble.

The project began with a three-day research and development period exploring how Burns’ story could be reimagined for contemporary audiences while remaining rooted in the world of the original poem. Working with a writer, composer, producer and actors, the team explored narrative structure, character development and early musical ideas, laying the foundations for a new stage adaptation.

Why This Story

Adapting Tam O’Shanter has been a long-held ambition of mine. My Grandpa often recited the poem to me when I was growing up, and the vivid language of Burns’ writing created a world I have always wanted to explore further on stage.

Alongside this personal connection, I am passionate about making Burns’ work feel accessible and relevant for modern audiences. His writing is often seen as nostalgic or outdated, but it contains humour, darkness and complexity that still resonates today.

This adaptation also places greater focus on the women in the story, particularly Nannie and Kate, allowing them greater agency within the narrative and expanding their perspectives within the world of the poem.

Artistic Approach

The project explores how the story might be told through music, theatrical imagery and inventive staging. Early development included experimenting with puppetry and visual storytelling to help shape the aesthetic of the production.

The adaptation also draws on the cultural heritage of Dumfries and Galloway, where Robert Burns lived and where I grew up, grounding the project in the landscape and traditions that shaped the original poem.

Development

The initial R&D period focused on establishing whether Tam O’Shanter could successfully be adapted into a musical. Through collaborative exploration, the team began shaping a narrative structure that expands on the poem while remaining true to its tone and spirit.

This stage of development provided a foundation for future phases of the project, including further writing, music development and design exploration.
